What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and restarts during sleep, depriving the brain and body of oxygen.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most prevalent form, occurring when throat muscles relax excessively during sleep and block the airway. Each breathing pause — called an apnea — can last 10 seconds or longer and may occur hundreds of times per night. The result is fragmented sleep, plummeting oxygen levels, and a cascade of health consequences that extend far beyond feeling tired.

In the UAE, studies estimate that 25–30% of adults have some form of sleep-disordered breathing, yet the vast majority remain undiagnosed. Factors common in the region — including higher obesity rates, sedentary lifestyles, and hot climates that limit outdoor exercise — contribute to elevated prevalence.

Obstructive (OSA)

The most common type. Throat muscles relax and block the airway during sleep, causing breathing pauses and oxygen drops. Accounts for 84% of cases.

Central (CSA)

The brain fails to send proper signals to breathing muscles. Less common, often associated with heart failure or neurological conditions.

Complex / Mixed

A combination of obstructive and central sleep apnea. Typically identified when OSA does not resolve fully with initial CPAP therapy.

Normal
AHI < 5
Fewer than 5 events per hour
Mild
AHI 5–15
5 to 15 events per hour of sleep
Moderate
AHI 15–30
15 to 30 events per hour of sleep
Severe
AHI 30+
More than 30 events per hour

Common Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Recognising the signs early is the first step toward effective treatment. If you experience two or more of these regularly, consider a sleep evaluation.

Loud, chronic snoring — often reported by a partner
Witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep
Waking up gasping or choking at night
Excessive daytime sleepiness despite 7+ hours of sleep
Morning headaches and persistent brain fog
High blood pressure or irregular heartbeat
Irritability, mood swings, or depression
Frequent nighttime urination (nocturia)

Who Is at Risk for Sleep Apnea?

While sleep apnea can affect anyone, certain factors significantly increase your likelihood of developing the condition.

Excess Weight

BMI over 30 increases risk by 3–5x. Fat deposits around the upper airway can obstruct breathing.

Age & Gender

Risk increases with age, particularly after 40. Men are 2–3x more likely to develop OSA than pre-menopausal women.

Anatomy

A narrow airway, large tonsils, recessed jaw, or neck circumference over 17 inches elevate risk significantly.

Family History

Having a first-degree relative with sleep apnea increases your risk by up to 2x due to inherited airway traits.

Lifestyle Factors

Smoking, alcohol use, and sedative medications relax airway muscles and worsen obstruction during sleep.

Medical Conditions

Hypertension, type 2 diabetes, congestive heart failure, and PCOS are all associated with higher OSA prevalence.

How Sleep Apnea Is Diagnosed in Dubai

A sleep study (polysomnography) is the gold standard for diagnosing sleep apnea. With Noxify, you can complete this from the comfort of your own bed.

The Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) — the number of breathing pauses per hour of sleep — is the primary metric used to diagnose and classify sleep apnea severity. Noxify's home sleep test measures this along with SpO2, respiratory effort, and body position.

Sleep Apnea Treatment Options in Dubai

Treatment depends on severity. Most patients respond well to non-invasive options, and Noxify includes a complimentary CPAP trial with every positive diagnosis.

CPAP Therapy

The first-line treatment for moderate-to-severe OSA. A small device delivers gentle air pressure to keep your airway open during sleep.

95% effective when used consistently
Noxify offers a complimentary multi-night trial
Modern devices are whisper-quiet and compact

Oral Appliance Therapy

A custom-fitted dental device that repositions the jaw to keep the airway open. Best suited for mild-to-moderate OSA.

Custom-fitted by a sleep dentist
Portable and travel-friendly
Ideal for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP

Lifestyle Modifications

Weight loss, positional therapy, and reducing alcohol intake can significantly reduce symptoms in mild cases.

10% weight loss can reduce AHI by 50%
Sleeping on your side reduces obstruction
Avoiding alcohol 3h before bed helps

Surgical Options

Reserved for cases where other treatments fail. Procedures aim to remove tissue or reposition structures blocking the airway.

UPPP, MMA, or hypoglossal nerve stimulation
Typically a last resort after CPAP/OAT
Evaluated on a case-by-case basis

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

Untreated sleep apnea doesn't just disrupt your sleep — it dramatically increases your risk of life-threatening conditions.

3× Heart Disease Risk

Severe OSA triples the risk of coronary artery disease, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation.

4× Stroke Risk

Untreated moderate-to-severe sleep apnea quadruples the likelihood of having a stroke.

Type 2 Diabetes

OSA disrupts insulin regulation. Up to 71% of type 2 diabetes patients have comorbid sleep apnea.

7× Accident Risk

Daytime drowsiness from untreated OSA makes drivers 7× more likely to be involved in a motor vehicle accident.

80%of moderate-to-severe sleep apnea cases remain undiagnosed
